Weekly Update: Lost Will Not Reveal All; Defying Gravity Done at ABC

Lost Will Not to Answer all of its Questions: At a music and arts festival in Seattle, Lost’s producers announced that they would not answer all of the shows questions when it wraps up with its series finale next year. Apparently they want to leave some mysteries unresolved to give the show that lingering power that unsolved mysteries have. Executive Producer Carlton Cuse did say that they have already mapped out the answers that they felt had to be revealed, but that some would be left hanging after the conclusion of sixth season which he says will have a more spiritual bent to it. He also did hint that Lost may live on after it concludes its run noting that it is a very lucrative franchise and that Disney (who owns ABC) may want to revisit it at some point in the future. He did not give any further details on a possible continuation beyond that, though.

Defying Gravity Officially Done at ABC: The alphabet network may have billed last night’s episode of Defying Gravity as the “season finale”, but don’t be fooled into thinking that’s all of the episode for the show’s first season. The international joint venture that made its way to ABC’s Summer schedule has actually completed thirteen episodes of the series for its first (and probably only) season. However, the genre-splicing show that combines soap opera with space exploration seems to have turned off more viewers than it attracted. Even its home Canadian network moved the show to the less desirable Friday night timeslot when it did not meet up to ratings expectations there. The numbers have been even worse on ABC where the show has struggled to maintain even one rating point in the 18-49 demographic. The network has pulled the show from its schedule, though you have to wonder what would have happened to it anyway with the Fall Season kicking off this month anyway. The remaining five episodes would have taken the show into October, yet ratings powerhouses Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters were already slated to take back Sunday nights starting September 27th. There is no word whether the show will be allowed to finish out its run on Hulu.com like NBC did with The Listener earlier this Summer. The show will almost certainly get a DVD release at some point, though, allowing fans to catch the final five episodes when that happens (and if not, there is always iOffer.com).
