Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Dollhouse Cancelled!!!

November 12th, 2009

Despite claiming a few weeks ago that they planned on making it through Fall without any cancellations, FOX has announced that they are pulling the plug on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. The show struggled in the ratings during its first season but received a miracle, last-minute renewal for a second season. But the series debuted this Fall with ratings even lower than what it ended its first season with, and the numbers only went down from there. Fans had to see the writing on the wall when FOX pulled the show from its schedule for the November sweeps month, and now they have made it official that Dollhouse will not continue beyond its current season order.

The good news at this point is that they will let the series finish out its current run of episodes. Thirteen installments were planned for its second season and they are currently producing the eleventh episode. This gives Joss Whedon and the rest of the creative staff a chance to provide some sort of wrap up for the series. The series will air two-hour blocks of episodes in December then the last few episodes will run in January.

Whedon did not have too much to say about the cancellation other than thanking the people he worked with:

“I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star (Eliza Dushku), my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.”

He also said that he was “off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking”, which could indicate that he will now focus his energies on the much rumored Dr. Horrible sequel.

I have not heard of much in the way of a “Save Dollhouse” campaign at the current time, though I am certain something will sprout up. Also, as I mentioned before, I consider it a possibility that one of the cable channels could take a chance with this one and try to continue it. However, since they are working toward the thirteenth episode acting as a series finale, I’m not certain if a continuation would be plausible. Check back with us for updates on the fate of the series and if you are running a “Save Dollhouse” campaign then send us the information and we will include it on our Save My Show page.

According to TV by The Numbers, here is the schedule for the remaining episodes of Dollhouse:
12/4  2 episodes from 8p-10p
12/11 2 episodes from 8p-10p
12/18  2 episodes from 8p-10p
1/8 1 ep @9pm
1/15 1 ep @9pm
1/22 1 ep @9pm (series finale)
