Weekly Box Office Results: The Apocalypse Rules! 2012 Explodes at the Theaters

2012-poster-2.jpgOnly one new movie in the Science Fiction and Fantasy realm opened at the Box Office this weekend, but it made a huge splash on the big screen. 2012, from the master of disaster Ronald Emmerich, took the Number 1 slot at the Box Office for the weekend and pulled in over $65 million in receipts. On top of that, the movie has a projected tally across the foreign box offices of $160 million bringing it to a total of over $225 million for its first three days. This of course will only encourage Mr. Emmerich to bring us even more tales of disaster with his upcoming projects (assuming that the world continues past the year 2012).

The animated A Christmas Carol slipped to the Number 2 slot, but only dropped off by 25% from its prior week tally. That should be encouraging to producers, seeing as they have to make up for a $200 budget, and this movie should have pretty decent staying power for the next month because of its holiday season appeal.

On the verge of dropping out of the Top 20 this week are Zombieland and Saw VI. The former, which has been out for seven weeks, had a healthy run and pulled in nearly $75 million domestically plus an additional $10 million from the foreign box office vs. a $25 million budget. The latter is making a fairly quick exit after only four weeks, though it has more than recouped its rather small $11 million budget and talks are already underway for Saw VII.

Following are the results for all of the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror movies in the Top 20 for the weekend of November 13-15:

1) 2012 – Prior Wk: New, Draw (Total): $65.24 MM ($65.24 MM)
