Opening Today: New Freddy is a Nightmare for the Critics
The latest reboot of a horror movie franchise kicks off today as Nightmare on Elm Street opens in theaters. Based on Wes Craven’s infamous series of horror movies, this one has a whole new production crew and a new Freddy (Jackie Earl Haley who played Rorschach in Watchmen and currently co-stars as Guerrero on Human Target). Critics have so far been underwhelmed by this “re-imagining” of NoES as it has only scraped up a 12% Fresh Rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site as of its opening day. Following is the current consensus opinion on the movie:
Visually faithful but lacking the depth and subversive twists that made the original so memorable, the Nightmare on Elm Street remake lives up to its title in the worst possible way.
Rossiter Drake of the San Francisco Examiner had little good to say about the film in his review as he commented that “For all his calculated bumps in the night and shots of creepy-looking preschoolers moping around a boiler room, Bayer misses the little things that made the original so hard to forget. Craven was right to keep his distance from this one.” Uncle Creepy of Dead Central was a bit more favorable in his review saying that “The solid performances, stunning cinematography and visuals, and revamped and brutal Freddy make this A Nightmare on Elm Street worth checking out.” You can see the trailer for the movie at its official website and you can read more of the critics’ opinions at the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page.
