We know that by the calendar Summer doesn’t officially start until June 21st, but for Hollywood it gets started at the beginning of May with the kick-off of the Summer Blockbuster season. And this year has plenty of mega-dollar extravaganzas on the schedule to lure people into the theaters (for more on that, see our Movie Preview page). And today is when it all begins with the release of one of the more anticipated movies from the season, Iron Man 2. This one has already made over $100 million in its early release overseas last weekend and the prognosticators are predicting that it will meet or exceed that number in its first weekend of domestic release. And so far, the critics have found the movie to be an acceptable enough sequel as it has attained a 70% Fresh Rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website as of its opening day. Following is the current consensus opinion on the movie:
It isn’t quite the breath of fresh air that Iron Man was, but this sequel comes close with solid performances and an action-packed plot.
Mark Dujsik of Mark Reviews Movies seemed to enjoy the movie, saying in his review that “When it’s working solely for itself, Iron Man 2 works, and does so better than its predecessor.” Don Kaye of Sci Fi Wire was less enthusiastic, though, saying in his review that “Iron Man 2 doesn’t quite reach the levels of awesomeness established by other super sequels like X2 and The Dark Knight. But the movie kind of succeeds in spite of itself and a choppy, cut-and-paste script from Justin Theroux that does too little with too much and takes too much time doing it.” You can see the trailer for the movie at its official website and you can read more of the critics’ opinions at the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page.
