The Avengers was expected to kick this Summer Blockbuster season off to a strong start, but the film has already surpassed pretty much every expectation in its opening weekend. It is projected to have a $200 million tally for its domestic debut marking just one of many Box Office records, and with its early release overseas it has already earned over $640 million worldwide. The film definitely has the momentum to grab the prize as the highest grossing film ever by the time it finishes its theatrical run and has definitely solidified the Marvel superheroes as a sure winner at the Box Office (and also likely set up director Joss Whedon for life). The tallies from all of the other genre films in the Top 20 paled in comparison to The Avengers, totaling cumulatively to less than 10% of the the domestic opening of the Marvel film. Though John Carter did have a surprise return to the Top 20 as that one landed in the Number 11 slot after dropping out of site last weekend (maybe Disney pushed it back into the theaters hoping for some overflow traffic from The Avengers).
