As Christmas approaches, we will be passing on a Science Fiction and Fantasy related gift idea per day including some last minute gift options the week before the big day for those late shoppers.  Why 21 days of Christmas instead of the usual 12?  Because in Science Fiction and Fantasy we are always trying to expand the boundaries!

Day 21: The Gift’s in the Mail!

This is it, tomorrow’s the big day!  Still looking for a gift at the absolute last minute?  Don’t want to do a gift card?  Here’s an idea: order a DVD that hasn’t come out yet but will be released in the next week or two.  You can just say you didn’t realize it was a pre-order DVD, but they will be getting it in the mail shortly!  Even better, Amazon.com won’t charge you until the movie ships, so if you’re short on cash this late in the holidays, you can wait and pay with some of that Christmas money you’re hoping to get!  Following are a few Science Fiction and Fantasy titles currently available for pre-order, and you can also check out all of Amazon.com’s new and upcoming releases on DVD at this link.

Day 20: Netflix Gift Subscription

Netflix, Inc.Still looking for that last minute Christmas present for a Science Fiction and Fantasy fan and you don’t have much time left to shop?  We’ve brought you several suggestions over the last few days like gift certificates, the Lord of the Rings Online game, movie downloads, and subscriptions to audio book services.  Now we are bringing you that old reliable: a gift subscription to Netflix.  If you are still not onboard with this service, it’s time to board the ship.  I have been a Netflix subscriber since 2001 and have loved the service the whole time.  They have a huge selection which includes almost everything that has made it to DVD at some point.  They have literally thousands and thousands of Science Fiction and Fantasy titles including Anime, television shows, and hard to find movies.  They also offer online viewing of some of their titles and have some selections online which cannot be found anywhere else like J. Michael Straczynski’s Jeremiah Season 2.  Turnaround on the movies you get through the mail is quite fast and usually you receive the next title in your queue a day or two after mailing one back.  Plus, they allow you to put your account on vacation hold or even suspend it for several months if you know you will not have time to watch videos.  With gift subscriptions as low as $8.99, you just can’t go wrong with this one!

Day 19: The Gift of Audio Books

These days it just seems like there’s never enough time to sit down and read a book anymore.  On the other hand, it seems like the time we spend on our commutes to work and other places increases all the time.  So why not see how the two problems can present an opportunity?  With a CD player in practically every car and  an MP3 player in practically every pocket, we have the chance to listen to more than just music.  And while many decry that the market for print books continues to dwindle, the selection of audio books on CD and MP3 grows by leaps and bounds.  And many of the new and classic Science Fiction and Fantasy titles rank among the most popular audio book selections.  Sure, in the past the high prices of these aural tomes tended to scare us off, but the cost for these has started to drop and the venues for finding titles has increased and just may provide the perfect option for a last minute gift idea.

Heard any good Audiobooks lately? Get one free!
Of course well-known sellers like Amazon.com have a large selection of titles available in both CD and MP3, but other sellers have expanded our options.  Emusic.com has been around for several years and they offer a subscription service for downloading audio books in MP3 format.  They currently have close to a thousand Science Fiction and Fantasy titles available for download along with thousands from other genres as well.  I found their service easy to use and the selection quite good.  Several plans are available starting from as low as $7.99 per month (for a full year subscription) and these would make a quick, easy gift for fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy literature.

Booksfree
And with Netflix changing the paradigm for video rentals, BooksFree.com is looking to do the same thing with Audio Book rentals.  They offer a rental service very similar to what Netflix does, but for Audio Books (and print books as well).  With over a thousand Science Fiction and Fantasy titles, you just queue up the ones you want and they send them to you in the mail with a post-paid return envelope included.  I gave them a try and was quite happy with their service and they have plans starting as low as $13.49 per month (for MP3 CDs).  Just like with eMusic.com, a subscription to BooksFree.com would make a great, easy gift!

Day 15: Where No Christmas Has Gone Before?

It was 40 years ago this year that Star Trek: The Original Series ended its run on NBC.  After three seasons of pulling only lackluster ratings many probably would have predicted that the show would have faded into television obscurity.  Quite the contrary.  Instead, the franchise continued on into 5 sequel series and 11 movies (with more on the way).  And for those fans of the original series, here’s just a few gift ides to remember its legacy:

Star Trek the Original Series Phaser: What Star Trek fan would not want their very own phaser.  Only the coolest Science Fiction weapon ever!  (Okay, maybe second coolest to the lightsaber).  And while you’re at it, why not pick up a communicator and tricorder to complete your landing party set?

Star Trek the Original Series Black Handle Phaser

Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 High Definition Ship: And of course every Star Trek fan needs their very own replica of the Enterprise so why not pick up this one with additional detail based on the digitally-remastered  television series?

Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 High Definition Ship

Star Trek TOS Vinyl Figures: And these vinyl figures from TOS by Funko would be a great addition to any Star Trek enthusiasts collection!

Star Trek: The Original Series Remastered: And of course there are the recently released remastered DVD collecting all of the episodes of the show’s three seasons.  Available on Blu-ray as well.

21 Days of Sci Fi Christmas Day 14: Banzai into Christmas!

Day 14: Banzai into Christmas!

Did you realize it?  This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension in the theaters (it debuted August 15, 1984).  There are plenty of Science Fiction fans (including all of us) who love this odd little gem of a cult movie and here are a few gift ideas for those people. And always remember: “No matter where you go, there you are.”

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (Special Edition) on DVD: Relive the magic or discover what all the fuss is about!  The DVD has the version of the movie released in the theaters plus the prologue that was edited out and which provides additional backstory on Buckaroo Banzai (and includes Jamie Lee Curtis as his mother).  It also has deleted scenes and a nice “making-of” documentary.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension Novelization: The novelization of the movie was out of print for some time, but now it is available again in a special edition. The book fills in more of the story so that you understand things like who Penny Priddy is and who the Blue Blazers are. It also includes a new introduction by the author as well as new color photos from the movie. A must for all Buckaroo fans.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai : Across the Eighth Dimension

The Further Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Remember how the end of the movie promised a sequel called Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League?  Well that never happened, but his story has continued in comics and with the original creative team running the show.  So check out a few of these titles for his further adventures where we do indeed find out about that World Crime League.

Day 13: You Are Entering the Christmas Zone!

This year (believe it or not) marks the 50th anniversary of the original Twilight Zone which debuted on CBS on October 2, 1959. So what better way to celebrate that milestone than with some TZ gifts for some of your trippiest friends? Here’s just a few suggestions:

Twilight Zone Invader Bobble Head – Who doesn’t love a bobble head and who could resist this gem from the classic series?  And if you want to supersize that gift, pair this with the Twilight Zone Mystic Seer Bobble Head we already saw on Day 6!

tz-invader-bobblehead

The Twilight Zone Companion – Every fan of the original Twilight Zone needs a copy of this book in their library which gives an in depth, behind the scenes look at the series plus an episode-by-episode guide!  (See Sam Christopher’s review of the book)

The Twilight Zone Companion

The Complete Twilight Zone 50th Anniversary Trading Cards – How could you possibly pass on this set of collectible trading cards that includes four autographed cards?

The Complete Twilight Zone 50th Anniversary Trading Cards (Rittenhouse) - Box

The Twilight Zone on DVD – And of course you and your friends will want to relive the glory days with the original series on DVD.
